Pyrgi and Mesta: The Medieval Mastic Villages of Chios

The mastic villages (Mastihohoria) of southern Chios are unique settlements designed like fortresses in the Middle Ages to protect the mastic trade. The two most famous are Pyrgi and Mesta.

Pyrgi — The “Painted Village”

Pyrgi is famous for the black-and-white geometric patterns (“xysta”) adorning its house façades. Walking its narrow lanes feels like wandering an open-air museum. The village square is lively with cafés and small shops.

Mesta — The Fortress Village

Mesta is practically a labyrinth, with outward-facing walls and interconnected arched alleys. Built as a defence against pirate raids, this layout still stands almost untouched today. Stone houses and quiet courtyards make time stand still.

Visiting Tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes — the lanes are cobbled and narrow.
  • Don’t leave without tasting local mastic delicacies at the village tavernas.
  • The two villages are close together and can be visited in the same day.
